10 March 08 - 03:20The Myth of IT Skills Shortage
A little off our usual Symas and OpenLDAP path but related. As SlashDotted this morning, we found the article Is there Really an IT labor shortage? in Baselilne Magazine quite important and well written.
We agree with the article's premise. There's no shortage. But given enough time, management will create one.

29 August 06 - 11:53So They're Against Testing(?)
Well, this popped up in an email from one of the founders. The bottom line: The Virus-Detection community thinks its counterproductive for someone to create test data (viruses) and run them against their detectors and maybe find bugs.

Obviously, either the technology can't do the job or these departments aren't stepping up to the plate. Much of what they're apparently being criticized for is stuff you have to do to prepare for rolling out IAM software, so maybe that's part of the problem.

Just a nice piece over at cNet about Novell's latest revelations about the state of their business and especially the 31% year on year growth of SuSE Linux revenues. Lots more copies of OpenLDAP. Makes us at Symas happy for them and Linux and its community. Via SlashDot.

25 04 08 03:08Thoughts on Openness
Slashdot ran this entry pointing to an article on Ted Ts'o's blog about an aspect of Sun's approach to "Open Source". The folks at Symas just thought you'd want to think about it.
